Houdini Interface and Network Mental Model

Cross the conceptual threshold from “DCC with menus” to “graph of operators”. Without this, nothing else in Houdini makes sense. Here’s how to do it in Houdini on macOS, step by step — part of the free Houdini beginner curriculum.
Lesson 1 of the Houdini curriculum. Next up: SOP Geometry Basics for FX Sources.
What you’ll do
- Identify the four panes of the default Build desktop: Scene View (3D viewport), Network Editor (node graph), Parameter Editor (parameters of the selected node), and the Pane Tabs at the top
- Switch desktops from the desktop selector (Build, Modeling, FX, Solaris, etc.) at the top right of the menu bar
- Pan the Network Editor with MMB drag; zoom with scroll wheel or Cmd+drag; frame all with A; frame selected with F
- Tumble the Scene View with Space + LMB drag; pan with Space + MMB drag; zoom with Space + RMB drag (or scroll)
- Press Tab inside the Network Editor to open the node creation menu (the “Tab menu”) — the single most-used shortcut in Houdini
- Identify the current context from the path bar at the top of the Network Editor (
/obj,/stage,/obj/geo1,/out, etc.) - Recognize the cook state colors on a node: red (not cooked), yellow (cooking), green (cached), and the cook indicator bar
- Recognize the display flag (blue square) and render flag (purple square) on SOP nodes — and that they can sit on different nodes intentionally
- Understand that the bypass flag (yellow) disables a node, and the template flag (cyan) shows wireframe of a node’s output even when it is not displayed
- Open the Parameter Editor for a selected node and find the parameter spreadsheet, the gear menu, and the channels button (the small green dot beside any animatable parameter)
Do it hands-free with Skilly
Reading steps is one thing; doing them while the menus are in front of you is another. Skilly is a voice-first tutor for macOS: you ask out loud — “where’s the interface panel?” — and it answers while moving your cursor to the exact button, watching your actual Houdini window. It’s the same Houdini curriculum these lessons come from, taught live instead of read. Free to start.
